Oesophagostomum columbianum, commonly known as the nodular worm, belongs to the family Chabertiidae within the order Strongylida. These are slender, whitish nematodes measuring between 12 and 22 mm in length.

The morphology is characterized by a small mouth capsule and a distinct cervical bend at the anterior end, which are key diagnostic features for laboratory identification.

The lifecycle is direct, meaning it does not require an intermediate host. Eggs are shed in feces, developing into infective L3-stage larvae in pastures under favorable environmental conditions.

Infection occurs when sheep or goats graze on contaminated vegetation and ingest these infective larvae, which then migrate to the large intestine for further development.

Once inside the host, larvae penetrate the intestinal mucosa, forming characteristic nodules that give the parasite its common name, the nodular worm.
