These mollusks predominantly damage seaweed farms and aquaculture systems. By attaching themselves to artificial substrates, pipes, and the plants themselves, they interfere with the nutrient uptake of crops. Furthermore, their presence in high densities can compromise the integrity of intake pumps and filtration equipment, leading to system failures.

The biology of Calyptraeidae is defined by a sedentary adult stage and a dispersive larval stage (veliger). This biphasic life cycle allows the pests to colonize new farming equipment rapidly. They are filter feeders, which means they excel in nutrient-rich waters—conditions often artificially created in intensive aquaculture, favoring their population growth.

The damage caused by these pests is both direct and indirect. Directly, they compete for space and nutrients with cultivated species. Indirectly, their heavy calcified shells can disrupt the flow of water and light, creating localized hypoxic zones that stress the crops.
