Coypu (Myocastoridae)

The Coypu (Myocastor coypus), commonly known as nutria, belongs to the family Myocastoridae within the order Rodentia. Originating from South America, this large, semi-aquatic rodent has become an invasive species in many parts of the world. In an agricultural context, it is recognized as a significant pest due to its destructive feeding habits and burrowing behavior.

Coypus primarily feed on aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation, but they readily adapt to consuming agricultural crops. They are particularly damaging to maize, sugar beets, wheat, and various vegetable crops. In orchards, coypus have been known to girdle the stems of young fruit trees, which can cause severe stunting or the eventual death of the plant.

The biology of the coypu is characterized by high reproductive rates, with females capable of producing several litters per year. This high fecundity allows populations to rebound quickly after control efforts. They are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, living in complex burrow systems that they excavate along riverbanks, irrigation ditches, and pond edges.

The damage caused by coypus is twofold: direct consumption of agricultural products and structural damage to farm infrastructure. Their burrowing activities compromise the integrity of earthen dams, canal banks, and flood defenses. This often leads to increased soil erosion, unintended flooding of fields, and the loss of essential irrigation water.

Integrated management is necessary to control coypu populations effectively. This includes physical barriers such as heavy-duty mesh fencing to exclude them from high-value fields. Furthermore, environmental management, such as clearing dense vegetation along canals, can make areas less attractive for denning. Trapping remains the most common method for direct population reduction in areas where lethal control is permitted.
