The larvae are capable of penetrating tough woody tissues, creating extensive tunnel systems that weaken the structural integrity of the host plant. The life cycle of Metarbelidae begins when females deposit eggs on the bark of host trees. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the wood, where they feed on inner bark and xylem. The larval stage is lengthy, allowing the insect to grow significantly within the protected environment of the host. Pupation also occurs within these tunnels before the adult moth emerges to reproduce.

The damage caused by these insects is often cumulative. Externally, the presence of the pest is indicated by frass accumulation, sap exudation, and localized dieback of branches. Internally, the tunnels disrupt nutrient transport, leading to tree decline, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by fungi or bacteria, which can eventually kill the tree.

Key strategies include the periodic removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts to reduce the population density. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides, while monitoring with pheromone traps helps determine the optimal timing for intervention.
