How to identify

The Grape leafhopper (Erythroneura obliqua) is a small insect belonging to the Cicadellidae family, commonly found in vineyards across various climatic zones.

Adult leafhoppers are slender, roughly 3 mm in length, and typically display a pale yellow or straw-colored body with distinct red or brown oblique markings on their wings.

The nymphs (immature stages) are similar in shape to adults but are significantly smaller, lack wings, and have a more translucent, light-colored appearance.

These insects are highly agile; adults are capable of jumping away quickly when disturbed, while nymphs move rapidly across the underside of the leaves.

Their mouthparts are specialized for piercing plant tissue and sucking out sap, which is the primary cause of the damage they inflict on the vines.

What it damages

While their primary host is the grapevine, they can occasionally feed on other fruit-bearing plants nearby if the environmental conditions are favorable.

The leafhoppers pierce the epidermis of the leaves and feed on the cell contents, disrupting the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively.

Heavy infestations lead to stippling, where the leaves become covered in numerous tiny white or yellow dots, causing the leaf tissue to lose its green color.

This stress weakens the vine, reducing the carbohydrate accumulation needed for fruit development and hardening of the canes before the winter season.

In severe cases, premature leaf drop occurs, which can significantly stunt the growth of the vine and decrease the quality and sugar content of the grapes.

When it appears

The species overwinters as adults in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter, tall grass, cracks in trellis posts, or under the bark of the grapevine.

Activity begins in early spring as temperatures rise, usually coinciding with the bud-break stage, when the insects move from their overwintering sites to the vines.

The females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue, and the subsequent nymphs develop through several stages, usually completing two to three generations per year.

Population levels tend to peak during the mid-to-late summer months (July and August), when warm weather facilitates rapid reproduction and development.

As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, the adult insects begin to migrate toward their overwintering sites to survive the cold season.

Signs of infestation

The most recognizable symptom is the appearance of small, white stipples on the upper surface of the leaves, which are caused by the feeding activities of the leafhoppers.

On the underside of the leaves, one can often find numerous shed skins (exuviae) left behind by the nymphs as they molt through their developmental stages.

As the infestation progresses, the leaf stippling becomes more confluent, giving the leaves a scorched, marble-like appearance before they eventually wither.

Affected leaves may curl downward or become brittle, which is often mistaken for drought stress or nutrient deficiency by inexperienced growers.

  • Presence of white, stippled spots on the leaf surface.
  • Translucent white insect skins on the underside of leaves.
  • Sudden jumping activity when shaking the vine canopy.

Control measures

Sanitation is a critical management strategy; clearing away fallen leaves and debris around the vineyard in autumn removes the primary overwintering habitats.

Proper vine canopy management, including timely pruning and thinning, improves air circulation, which creates a less favorable environment for leafhopper populations.

Biological control agents, such as predatory mites, lacewings, and specific parasitic wasps, play a significant role in keeping leafhopper numbers in check.

Insecticidal sprays, including those based on neem oil or systemic neonicotinoids, can be used when monitoring indicates that population thresholds have been exceeded.

Sticky traps can be used for monitoring purposes to track the arrival of adults and determine the optimal timing for implementing control measures.
