Hart's grape leafhopper (Erythroneura hartii) is a small insect belonging to the Cicadellidae family, order Hemiptera. These insects are typically less than 3 millimeters long, making them difficult to spot without careful inspection.
Adults exhibit an elongated shape with color patterns ranging from pale yellow to reddish-brown, often featuring unique markings on the wings. Nymphs, while resembling miniature adults, lack developed wings.
These insects are highly agile and move by jumping rapidly, which helps them evade predators and detection. They are primarily found on the underside of grapevine leaves, where they feed in relative shade.
Due to the morphological similarity between species in the Erythroneura genus, precise identification often requires a magnifying glass or a microscope to examine specific wing vein patterns and genitalia.
Adults are sensitive to vibrations and will take flight quickly when the foliage is disturbed, which is a common behavior used by growers to identify the presence of these pests during field scouting.
What it damages
The primary host for Erythroneura hartii is the grapevine (Vitis species). Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs, who use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from the leaves.
The feeding process results in localized cell death, causing characteristic white stippling or spotting on the foliage. Heavy infestations can significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the vines.
Vineyards subjected to high pressure from these insects often show reduced vigor, poor cane maturation, and diminished fruit quality. In severe cases, premature leaf drop can stress the plant heading into winter.
Beyond direct feeding damage, the leafhoppers can act as vectors for various plant pathogens. The puncture wounds created during feeding also provide easy entry points for opportunistic fungal infections.
Young vineyards and nurseries are particularly vulnerable to leafhopper damage, as the loss of leaf surface area can hinder plant growth and lead to significant losses in vigor and overall production.
When it appears
Adults overwinter in leaf litter, debris, and protected areas surrounding the vineyard. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the emerging grape foliage to begin feeding and reproduction.
The first generation usually develops in late spring. The population growth is closely linked to weather conditions, with warmer temperatures accelerating the lifecycle of the nymphs.
Multiple generations can occur throughout the growing season. By mid-summer, populations often reach their peak, with all developmental stages present simultaneously on the leaves.
Mid-to-late summer is the period of highest activity. Growers should be most vigilant during July and August when the combination of warm weather and high reproductive rates creates peak pest pressure.
As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, the insects begin to move towards their overwintering sites, where they remain dormant until the following spring cycle begins.
Signs of infestation
The earliest symptom of an infestation is the appearance of small, white stipples or spots on the upper leaf surface. These correspond to the feeding sites where the leafhopper has pierced the epidermis.
As the infestation progresses, these stipples coalesce, causing the leaf to turn yellow or bronzed. Eventually, heavily infested leaves may dry out and drop prematurely from the vine.
Growers can identify the presence of nymphs by looking for white cast skins (exuviae) on the underside of the leaves. These discarded exoskeletons are clear indicators of recent leafhopper activity.
Field scouting is best performed by checking the lower leaf surface for nymphs and by shaking the vines to observe adult flight activity, especially during the warmer parts of the day.

Chemical control should be implemented only when scouting confirms that the pest population exceeds the economic threshold. Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective choice.
Applications must be timed correctly to target nymphs before they mature into highly mobile adults. Thorough coverage of the leaf undersides is critical for the efficacy of the treatment.
Always adhere to local guidelines regarding pesticide use and pre-harvest intervals. Integrating these practices into an overall IPM program ensures sustainable protection without harming beneficial insects.
