The Japanese elm aphid (Eriosoma japonicum) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Aphididae family, primarily impacting elm trees (Ulmus species).
These aphids are easily recognized by the white, waxy, cotton-like secretions they produce, which cover their bodies and make them appear as fluffy white clumps on leaves or bark.
Their life cycle involves complex transitions between different forms, including apterous (wingless) and alate (winged) individuals, which allow them to spread effectively across host plants.
They typically overwinter as eggs in protected crevices on the bark, emerging as stem mothers when favorable spring temperatures stimulate the tree's growth.

What it damages
