How to identify
Empoasca curveola belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. It is a small insect, with body lengths typically not exceeding 3–4 mm.
Adults have a characteristic elongated shape and a pale green or yellowish-green color, which allows them to effectively camouflage themselves on the undersides of leaves.
Nymphs look similar to adults but differ by the lack of wings and smaller size. They are very active and move sideways rapidly when disturbed.
The insect's body is covered with microscopic hairs, and the mouthparts consist of a piercing-sucking stylet adapted for feeding on plant sap.
Species identification in the field is difficult due to the high similarity with other species of the genus Empoasca, often requiring microscopic analysis of male genitalia for accuracy.
What it damages
This pest is a polyphage that damages a wide range of agricultural crops. Vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, are particularly at risk.

The main external sign of infestation is the appearance of specific white or yellowish spots on leaves, which are the feeding marks left by the insect's stylet.

Biological control methods include encouraging natural enemies such as predatory bugs, lacewings, and ladybirds, which regulate leafhopper populations.
It is important to practice crop rotation and avoid overcrowded plantings, as the microclimate in dense foliage with high humidity promotes rapid leafhopper reproduction.
