The Rhamnus whitefly (Latin name Dialeurolobus rhamni) is a small insect belonging to the Hemiptera order and the Aleyrodidae family. Adult individuals resemble tiny white moths, with a wingspan of only a few millimeters.

The bodies and wings of these insects are covered with a fine wax powder, which gives them a distinctive pale color. Nymphs, or larvae, lead a sedentary lifestyle, remaining attached to the underside of leaves for most of their development.

The life cycle includes the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, often in clusters protected by a waxy substance secreted by the insect.

Development is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Under favorable conditions, several generations can develop throughout the growing season, potentially leading to rapid population growth.

Identification can be difficult because the nymphs are small, flat, and often blend into the leaf surface. Using a magnifying glass is recommended to accurately detect the presence of the pest during the early stages of infestation.

What it damages

As the name suggests, this species primarily infests buckthorn (Rhamnus). The insects feed by inserting their mouthparts into the leaf tissue and extracting nutrient-rich plant sap.

While buckthorn is the primary host, the whitefly can occasionally spread to nearby ornamental shrubs in high-density populations. This behavior makes it a notable pest in various landscaping contexts.

Both adults and nymphs cause damage by continuously draining the plant's resources. This leads to the overall weakening of the shrub, making it less resilient to harsh weather conditions and other diseases.

Severe infestations cause leaves to yellow, curl, and eventually drop prematurely. The loss of foliage significantly impacts the plant's aesthetic appeal and hinders its ability to grow and produce new shoots.

The secretion of honeydew by the whitefly encourages the growth of sooty mold, which appears as a dark layer on the leaves. This mold inhibits photosynthesis, further starving the plant of energy and vitality.

Signs of infestation

The most common visual indicator is the presence of small, light-colored spots on the undersides of leaves where the insects have been feeding. These spots eventually grow as the colony expands.

The presence of sticky honeydew on the foliage is a tell-tale sign of a whitefly infestation. This substance may also attract ants, which often tend to the whiteflies, protecting them from predators.

Leaf curling, deformation, and stunted shoot development are classic symptoms of a struggling plant. If not addressed, these signs become more pronounced as the number of larvae increases.

Examining the underside of the leaves usually reveals the flat, immobile nymph stages. These look like small, light-colored scales that remain firmly attached to the plant surface.

A sudden cloud of small white insects flying up from the branches when shaken is the clearest sign of an active infestation. This is often the point when gardeners first realize the extent of the problem.

Control measures

Integrated pest management starts with cultural practices like proper pruning. Thinning out the branches improves air circulation, creating an environment that is less hospitable for whitefly development.

Monitoring with yellow sticky traps is an effective way to detect early activity. Placing these traps near susceptible plants allows for early intervention before the population reaches an uncontrollable level.

For light infestations, washing the leaves with water or a mild insecticidal soap solution can physically remove both nymphs and honeydew. This is a non-toxic way to manage small populations.

In cases of heavy infestation, systemic insecticides are the most effective solution. These treatments are absorbed by the plant and provide protection against feeding insects for an extended period.
