Bursaphelenchus sexdentati is a microscopic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae. These organisms are specialized parasites or phoretic associates of wood-boring insects.
The life cycle of this nematode is intimately connected to the six-toothed bark beetle, Ips sexdentatus. The beetle acts as the primary vector for the nematode.
Adult nematodes reside within the trachea of the beetle or on its body surface. This allows them to disperse from dying trees to healthy or stressed individuals.
Identification of the species requires laboratory analysis of wood samples or beetles. They possess a characteristic stylet used for feeding on fungal mycelia within bark beetle galleries.
The morphology of these nematodes is adapted for movement through the narrow tunnels created by bark beetles. They are generally translucent and very difficult to detect with the naked eye.
What it damages
