The mushroom nematode Bursaphelenchus fungivorus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Aphelenchida, and family Aphelenchoididae. It is a microscopic roundworm characterized by a distinct stylet used to pierce fungal hyphae.

These organisms are highly adaptable and thrive in the specific microclimate of mushroom cultivation facilities. They move easily through water films within the substrate, allowing them to spread rapidly.

The life cycle of this nematode is remarkably fast, often completing within a few days under optimal temperature conditions. This short life cycle leads to exponential population growth when control measures are absent.

Bursaphelenchus fungivorus can enter anhydrobiosis, a dormant state, during unfavorable conditions, which makes them highly resistant to environmental changes and standard cleaning procedures.

They are transparent and microscopic, making them invisible to the naked eye. Identification requires systematic laboratory monitoring using the Baermann funnel technique to isolate them from compost samples.

What it damages

This pest primarily infests commercial mushrooms like Agaricus bisporus (button mushrooms) and Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushrooms). By feeding on the mycelium, they directly impact the primary food source of the fungus.

As the nematodes consume the hyphal network, the mycelium loses its ability to colonize the substrate. This prevents the fungus from accumulating the nutrients necessary for the development of fruiting bodies.

In severe cases, nematodes invade the fruiting bodies directly. This leads to symptoms such as tissue softening, discoloration, and structural deformation, rendering the produce unsuitable for the market.

Nematodes are also vectors for bacterial and fungal pathogens. Their movement throughout the substrate spreads harmful bacteria, which often causes secondary rot and bacterial blotch in mushroom beds.

The overall impact is a significant reduction in yield. Entire production cycles can be lost if the infestation is not detected and contained at the very beginning of the cropping phase.

Signs of infestation

A primary indicator of nematode presence is the failure of the mycelium to fully colonize the compost. The mycelium appears thin, patchy, or entirely disappears from parts of the substrate.

Infected substrate may emit a pungent, sour, or musty smell, which is often a sign of both mycelial decay and the high concentration of nematode metabolic byproducts.

If mushrooms manage to pin, the fruiting bodies often appear stunted, underdeveloped, or water-soaked. In advanced infestations, the stems of the mushrooms become mushy and fragile.

A sudden drop in harvest productivity across multiple beds is a classic sign of a nematode outbreak. This usually correlates with a deterioration in the quality of the casing layer.

When examined under a microscope, compost samples from infested beds will show an abundance of active nematodes, confirming the cause of the decline in production.

Control measures

Strict sanitation is the foundation of management. Proper pasteurization of the compost at temperatures above 60°C is essential to eliminate nematode populations before spawning occurs.

The casing soil must also be treated with steam or heat to ensure it does not serve as a vector for contamination into the growing rooms.

Hygiene protocols for staff and equipment are critical. Footbaths and disinfection of tools help prevent the cross-contamination of clean rooms from infested ones.

Temperature and humidity management helps maintain the balance of the substrate, preventing the excess moisture that nematodes require to migrate and thrive.

  • Always use high-quality, nematode-free spawn from reliable producers.
  • Isolate and discard any infested batches immediately to prevent spores and worms from spreading.
  • Conduct regular microbiological testing of the casing and substrate.
