The sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona humeralis) is a member of the Muscidae family within the order Diptera. These small flies are common pests that pose a significant threat to cereal crops, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.
Adult flies are generally grayish in color with slight yellow tints, measuring approximately 3 to 5 millimeters in length. Their appearance is similar to many other muscid flies, which often leads to confusion without proper identification.
The larvae are typically creamy-white, headless, and cylindrical, adapted for feeding inside the succulent tissues of young grass plants, which is their primary survival strategy.
The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis, passing through the stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The population size is heavily dependent on moisture availability and temperature conditions.
Sorghum shoot flies are highly mobile during the adult stage, allowing them to rapidly colonize new fields where host plants are at a vulnerable developmental stage.
What it damages
The primary host for this pest is sorghum, though it is known to infest other cereals such as millet and various wild grasses, which act as alternative hosts throughout the season.
Damage is almost exclusively restricted to the seedling stage of the plant, specifically from germination until the plant reaches the 5-leaf stage, when it is most tender.
Larvae bore into the central stem, destroying the apical meristem or "growing point." This causes the central leaf to die, a condition commonly known as "deadheart" among agronomists.
The plant's reaction to the loss of its primary growth point is often to produce excessive tillers, which rarely develop into productive heads, thus causing massive yield loss.
Furthermore, the physical damage created by the larvae acts as an entry point for secondary pathogens, potentially leading to bacterial rot or fungal infections within the damaged stem.
Signs of infestation
The earliest symptom of an infestation is the drooping or yellowing of the youngest, central leaf of the seedling, which subsequently dries up and becomes easily removable.
Fields affected by the pest often show patches of stunted plants or areas with significant stand gaps, as early-stage infestations can kill the seedling before it establishes.
Upon inspecting the base of the plant, one might find the entrance hole used by the larva, or even the larva itself if the plant is dissected during the active infestation period.
Another sign of damage is the profuse tillering of plants that have managed to survive the initial larval attack, which creates an uneven, bushy appearance in the field.
The presence of adult flies hovering around young crops, especially in moist or cool morning conditions, serves as an early indicator of active pest pressure.
Control measures
Seed treatment with systemic insecticides is the most effective proactive measure, providing protection for the crop during the most vulnerable early seedling stage.
Adjusting planting dates is a crucial cultural practice; early sowing allows the crop to surpass the most susceptible 5-leaf stage before the peak population of the flies emerges.
Sanitation practices, such as the removal of volunteer plants and weeds, help to reduce the population reservoir of the sorghum shoot fly in the surrounding environment.
