Aphelenchoides jonesi is a species of microscopic parasitic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae. It is an endoparasitic pest that leads a hidden life within plant tissues.

Externally, this nematode is practically invisible to the naked eye due to its small body size, which reaches only about 0.5–0.8 mm in length. Precise species identification requires laboratory diagnostics using microscopy.

The nematode's body is thread-like, transparent or whitish, and adapted for moving through the vascular system and intercellular spaces of plants. It possesses a specialized piercing-sucking mouthpart called a stylet.

Systematically, this species is included in the order Tylenchida. Its biology is closely linked to the moisture regime, as the nematode requires a thin film of water to actively move across the surface of leaves and stems.

The pest population is capable of rapid reproduction under high humidity conditions, making it a dangerous object in greenhouses, indoor environments, and open fields during periods of frequent rainfall.

What it damages

This nematode species affects a wide range of ornamental, vegetable, and flowering crops. It poses a particular threat to plants prone to moisture accumulation in their leaves.

The list of host plants includes various types of garden flowers, indoor plants, and some types of ornamental shrubs. The pest enters tissues through natural openings, such as stomata, or through micro-injuries.

By feeding on cell sap, the nematode causes necrotic processes within the leaf blade. This leads to the disruption of photosynthesis and general metabolism of the host plant.

Severe infestation can lead to a complete loss of crop aesthetics and the gradual drying of individual shoots. In severe cases, the plant loses its ability to bloom.

Nematodes also facilitate the transfer of secondary infections, including bacterial and fungal pathogens, which enter the damaged leaf tissues.

Signs of infestation

The first sign of infestation usually appears as chlorotic spots on the leaves, which eventually turn brown or dark brown.

A characteristic feature is that the spots are limited by leaf veins, giving the affected areas an angular, mosaic-like shape. Leaves may become deformed and drop prematurely.

In the early stages, symptoms may be mistaken for fungal disease (e.g., septoria), but in the case of nematode infestation, spots develop faster under high humidity.

As the nematode colony develops, a faint coating or slight roughness may be observed on the underside of the leaf. With heavy infestation, the growth of apical buds slows down.

If the affected tissue is cut and placed in water, worm-like nematodes emerging from the tissues can be detected under a microscope.

Control measures

The primary method of control is maintaining a high level of phytosanitary discipline. It is essential to use only healthy planting material that has undergone prior inspection.

It is important to limit plant irrigation via overhead sprinkling, as water splashes promote the rapid spread of nematodes from infected specimens to healthy ones.

Thermal treatment of planting material (hot water soaking) is an effective way to destroy nematodes, but it requires strict adherence to temperature regimes.

When infestation foci are detected, it is necessary to immediately remove and destroy sick plants, including the root system and the adjacent soil layer.
