The Marlatt whitefly (Aleurolobus marlatti) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. Adults are minute insects featuring white wings often covered in a fine, waxy, powdery substance.
The nymphal stages, commonly referred to as puparia, are flat, oval-shaped, and dark to black in appearance. They attach themselves firmly to the undersides of citrus leaves, looking like small, shiny scales.
The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, multiple larval stages, and the adult phase. Females typically deposit their eggs in circular patterns on the tender undersides of host leaves.
Due to their waxy protective layer, these insects are resilient to various environmental stressors and some contact insecticides, requiring targeted applications for effective management.
Identification often relies on observing these black, scale-like puparia on the undersides of leaves, which are indicative of an infestation even before adult whiteflies are spotted.
What it damages
This pest is a specialized feeder on citrus species, including lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits. They extract vital sap from the plant, which depletes energy and weakens the host's vitality.
As they feed, they excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that coats the leaves and fruit. This residue serves as an ideal growth medium for sooty mold, which can cover the foliage in a dense, black layer.
The accumulation of sooty mold interferes with photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor, leaf chlorosis, and premature leaf drop. Severe infestations can significantly diminish the quality and market value of the citrus crop.
In addition to physiological stress, the Marlatt whitefly has been associated with the potential transmission of plant viruses, adding a layer of phytosanitary risk to infested orchards.
Young trees are particularly susceptible; without intervention, heavy populations can lead to stunted growth and, in extreme cases, the death of the saplings due to extreme nutritional deficiency.
When it appears
Activity typically begins in the spring as temperatures rise consistently. The population tends to peak during the warm summer months, particularly in environments with high relative humidity.
The pest is capable of multiple generations per year in subtropical climates. In protected greenhouse environments, breeding can continue year-round, bypassing traditional dormant seasons.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign is the presence of sticky honeydew on foliage, followed by the development of black sooty mold. Disturbance of the infested branches causes a cloud of white, moth-like adults to take flight.
Inspecting the underside of leaves will reveal the characteristic stationary black nymphs or puparia. Curling or yellowing of the leaves in response to sap-feeding is also a common indicator of infestation.
Control measures
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach involving cultural practices, biological control, and judicious chemical application to minimize the population.

- Encourage natural predators and parasitoids like specialized wasps to reduce pest numbers naturally.
