Plantain BEMBI

Technical Profile of the 'Bembi' Plantain Variety

Developed by the Gavrish Breeding Firm and the Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production (VNIIISSOK), the 'Bembi' plantain is a medicinal crop specifically optimized for temperate climates. Unlike wild-growing variations, this variety provides the uniformity necessary for commercial-scale harvesting and consistent phytochemical yield.

Morphological Architecture and Growth Dynamics

• Growth Habit: Erect, raised leaf rosette, which minimizes soil contact and reduces the incidence of rot.
• Leaf Morphology: Medium-large, elliptical leaves with prominent venation, ensuring structural integrity during the drying process.
• Seed Stalks: Robust and uniform development, facilitating efficient seed material separation.

Agronomic Potential and Efficiency

The breeding program for 'Bembi' focused on maximizing biological productivity—specifically the concentration of glycosides and flavonoids within the leaf tissue. The variety is resilient to various soil types, though it achieves peak output in well-drained conditions. A key practical advantage is its tolerance to early spring frosts, which allows for early seeding, taking full advantage of post-thaw moisture.

In practice, 'Bembi' is a preferred choice for both pharmaceutical production and specialized farms focusing on high-quality medicinal raw materials. The plant displays significant regenerative capacity; following the harvest of leaves, the plant rapidly restores its vegetative mass, allowing for multiple cuttings per season under optimal irrigation management.
