Oriental Saltwort SALANG

Sustainable solutions for arid grazing lands

The 'Salang' variety of saltwort (Keyreuk), developed by the All-Russian Research Institute of Karakul Sheep Breeding and the Williams Federal Research Center, is a specialized crop designed for challenging agricultural environments. It serves as a vital tool for livestock farmers operating in semi-arid and drought-prone regions.

Strategic applications for your farm

• Pasture restoration: Due to its robust root system, 'Salang' is highly effective at stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and reclaiming degraded rangelands that are otherwise unproductive.
• Livestock grazing: The crop is specifically managed for grazing sheep and goats, providing a reliable source of forage that maintains nutritional quality even in harsh conditions, ensuring consistent livestock weight gain.
• Hay production: 'Salang' is well-suited for mowing, allowing farmers to harvest and store forage for winter months, effectively reducing reliance on expensive supplementary feed.

The main economic advantage of the 'Salang' variety is its longevity. Once established, it remains a permanent fixture of the pasture ecosystem, eliminating the need for annual reseeding. This makes it a cost-efficient investment for livestock operations focused on sustainability and minimal operational expenditure in drought-affected climates.
