Unlike classic pesticides that act by blocking acetolactate synthase, mesotrione inhibits the enzyme 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (4-HPPD). In practice, this means stopping the biosynthesis of carotenoids. The target weed loses its ability to protect chlorophyll from degradation by sunlight, leading to rapid bleaching (chlorosis) and necrosis of tissues.

Selectivity and systemic mechanism

The main advantage of the "Egida" formulation lies in its selectivity. Corn has a unique ability to metabolize mesotrione into an inactive form, while weeds (especially a wide range of broad-leaved species) are neutralized. The product has a pronounced systemic effect: it penetrates the plant through both foliage and root system, providing protection even against weeds that have not yet emerged at the time of application.

Agronomic application aspects

• Application phase: Post-emergence control from 2 to 6 true leaves of the crop.
• Dosage: The effective range is 0.25–0.5 L/ha, allowing for flexible management depending on field weed pressure.
• Soil residual activity: Due to its stability in the soil profile, "Egida" creates a "barrier" effect that prevents the germination of new waves of broad-leaved weeds.

The suspension concentrate ensures the stability of the working solution and high adhesion to the leaf surface, which is critical under variable humidity conditions.
