Unlike photosynthetic inhibitors, this systemic herbicide specifically targets the synthesis of lipids. Once absorbed through the foliage, it translocates to the meristematic tissues and root systems of graminaceous weeds. This results in an immediate cessation of growth within hours, with noticeable chlorosis appearing by day 3–5 and complete plant death occurring within 7–14 days.

The critical role of the 'Amigo' adjuvant

The product's efficacy is bolstered by the inclusion of the 'Amigo' surfactant. This is a technical requirement for clethodim-based formulations. 'Amigo' functions by reducing the surface tension of spray droplets and modifying the leaf cuticle structure. This action is essential for bypassing the thick waxy layers typical of perennial grasses like Couch grass (Elymus repens) and Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense), which often exhibit resistance to standard contact herbicides.
