Description

Molecular Mechanism of Action

The efficacy of Balor, EC is rooted in the action of quizalofop-p-ethyl (125 g/L), a member of the aryloxyphenoxypropionate chemical family. Unlike soil-applied herbicides, this is a systemic product absorbed rapidly through the leaf surface. It moves via the phloem to the actively growing points — the meristematic tissues of roots and shoots. At a molecular level, it inhibits the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), halting fatty acid synthesis. Without this, the weed cannot form new cell membranes, resulting in rapid growth cessation.

Technical Application Insights

Formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC), the product ensures high stability in the spray tank and superior adhesion to the waxy cuticle of grasses. Because of its selective nature, it is safe for broadleaf crops such as soybeans, sunflowers, flax, oilseed rape, and fodder beets when used at labeled rates.

  • Systemic Control: The product translocates throughout the plant, effectively destroying both the foliage and the root system of stubborn perennial grasses like quackgrass (Agropyron repens).
  • Post-Emergence Flexibility: Designed as a post-emergence (insurance) herbicide, it is applied directly to actively growing weeds such as barnyard grass, foxtail, and wild oats.
  • Dosage Control: Application rates range from 0.4 to 1.2 L/ha, allowing for adjustments based on weed spectrum and density.

Balor, EC is restricted to one application per season. To ensure maximum efficacy in perennial weed control, it is essential to avoid mechanical cultivation for 5–7 days before or after application. This prevents the interruption of the chemical's systemic translocation from the leaves to the root system, which is critical for complete plant mortality.
