Melodi ® Duo — this is a new systemic-contact combined fungicide containing two active substances with different modes of action — traditional contact (propineb) and innovative systemic — iprodione.
The main active ingredient — iprodione — is able to quickly penetrate into the plant and move within it in an acropetal (from bottom to top) direction.
Acting as a preventive and curative agent, iprodione is also the leader among systemic active substances in suppressing pathogen sporulation.
The preventive effect of iprodione is expressed in blocking zoospore germination and preventing leaf infection.
The curative effect is due to its ability to disrupt the structure of microtubules along which necessary substances for fungal cell construction, such as glucan, are transported. Glucan, with the help of enzymes, is converted into cellulose, which forms microfibrils that constitute the cell wall of the mycelium. Due to the effect of iprodione, the mycelium develops deformed, with thickened walls, and eventually dies. The antispore activity of iprodione prevents the formation of sporangia, which penetrate through stomata and form zoosporangia.
The action on sporangia is similar to the action on mycelium in leaf tissues. Fully developed mycelium, which began forming sporangia, is not destroyed and can regrow several days later. To ensure its complete destruction, an additional active substance — propineb — is added to iprodione. This is a robust contact substance with a multifaceted mechanism of action and ideally supports the effect of iprodione on the pathogen.
Moreover, the presence of a sufficient amount of zinc in propineb allows considering the fungicide treatment also as an additional application of this important micronutrient (to which grapevines are particularly sensitive). A normal application of Melodi ® Duo at 2.5 kg/ha provides an additional application of 460 g of zinc per 1 ha.
