Description
Schisandra 'Debut' is a monoecious, hardy variety of Chinese Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), renowned for its winter hardiness and drought resistance. Young shoots are light green, while mature ones turn grey-brown, indicating a well-developed root system. The plant is easy to grow in open ground without the need to remove vines for winter, and its leaves and fruits possess a bright lemon aroma, perfect for making invigorating tea.
The 'Debut' fruits can reach a mass of up to 18 g and contain from 25 to 30 carmine-red berries, each weighing 0.7–1.0 g. The skin is thick and hairless, and the fruit shape is cylindrical and compact. Inside the berries are seeds, which are traditionally considered a tonic that raises blood pressure. The sweetness of the fruits is about 4.3% sugar, the vitamin C content is 96.8 mg/100 g, and acidity is 4.1%. The taste is sour with a characteristic resinous-balsamic aroma.
This variety differs in its medium ripening period and annual fruiting. The yield is approximately 6 centners per hectare, making it attractive for both home cultivation and small commercial plantations. Due to its resistance to diseases and pests, 'Debut' is easy to maintain in the garden, and its fruits are versatile – suitable for fresh consumption as well as for preparing infusions, juices, and other dishes.
