Virin-ZSP is a highly specialized viral biopesticide developed by the specialists of the State Specialized Forest Protection Service (DSLP) of Kharkiv. Unlike conventional chemical insecticides that target the insect nervous system, this product utilizes the nuclear polyhedrosis virus of the pine sawfly. This approach shifts pest control from total chemical elimination to sustainable epidemiological population management.

The product is formulated as an aqueous solution, ensuring optimal adhesion and coverage during aerial or ground-based forest treatment. Key technical features include:

• Target Specificity: The viral load is strictly pathogenic to larvae of the common pine sawfly, leaving beneficial entomophages and forest microflora unaffected.
• Prolonged Effect: Following primary infection, the virus spreads within the pest population, creating a self-sustaining "outbreak control" effect.
• Environmental Safety: Classified as Hazard Class 4, the product allows for safe application in forest park zones with minimal environmental restrictions.

Practical application and efficacy

The efficacy of Virin-ZSP depends heavily on the pest's developmental stage. Optimal application occurs during the period of mass larvae hatching (early instars). Once consumed by the insect while feeding on pine needles, the virus polyhedra disintegrate in the alkaline environment of the digestive tract, releasing virions. These infect epithelial cells, leading to host mortality within 5 to 12 days, depending on ambient temperature. It is critical to note that high humidity and moderate temperatures accelerate viral activation, whereas direct UV radiation can reduce virulency. Therefore, strategic timing—such as application during low-sunlight hours—is essential for maximizing field performance.
