Manganese

Description

Mode of action

Manganese is an essential micronutrient that activates numerous enzymes involved in oxidation and reduction reactions. It plays a key role in the photosynthetic process, directly influencing water splitting and oxygen evolution, and contributes to the accumulation of sugars and vitamins in fruits.

The element is actively involved in protein and nucleic acid synthesis, ensuring normal plant tissue growth and development. It regulates energy metabolism, accelerating metabolic processes and increasing the resistance of agricultural crops to environmental stress factors.

Manganese stimulates the activity of enzymes responsible for nitrogen assimilation, which promotes more efficient use of nitrogen fertilizers. Its presence in plant tissues is vital for forming a full harvest, as it influences fertilization processes and seed formation.

Physiologically, the element enhances plant resistance to fungal and bacterial diseases by strengthening cell walls. It also facilitates better phosphorus uptake, which is critical in the early stages of vegetation for the development of a powerful root system.

Maintaining the correct manganese balance in the soil supports a stable level of cellular respiration, which directly affects the shelf life of fruits and their commercial quality after harvest.

What it targets

Manganese is necessary to prevent chlorosis, which often manifests as yellowing of the interveinal leaf spaces while the veins remain green. This pathology is typical for plants in alkaline and calcareous soils, where the element transitions into an unavailable form.

Application of manganese fertilizers is effective against stunted growth, often observed in cereals and grain legumes. The element helps overcome the physiological weakness of seedlings, ensuring rapid leaf mass development even in cool weather conditions.

Using this element allows for the mitigation of leaf spotting signs characteristic of micronutrient deficiency. Timely fertilization prevents flower shedding and promotes complete grain formation, which is critical for increasing marketable product yield.

Correction of manganese nutrition is aimed at combating low fruit sugar content, often caused by impaired photosynthetic activity due to a lack of enzymatic support. This is particularly important for sugar beets, potatoes, and vegetable crops.

The element also helps minimize the negative impact of high liming rates, which often block the mobility of micronutrients in the soil solution, preventing crop growth inhibition in the first weeks after sowing.

Rates and timing

Manganese application rates are determined by soil chemical analysis, as its mobility strongly depends on pH levels. On acidic soils, application might not be necessary, whereas regular use of chelated forms is recommended on neutral and alkaline soils.

For foliar feeding, solutions of manganese sulfate or chelates in concentrations from 0.05% to 0.1% are generally used. Spraying should be conducted in the morning or evening hours to prevent chemical burns on the leaf surface.

Manganese is applied to the soil primarily as part of complex compound fertilizers during sowing, ensuring prolonged nutrition. Average rates for basal application range from 1 to 3 kg of active ingredient per hectare, depending on the crop and soil type.

Critical phases for manganese application include periods of active growth and the formation of generative organs. Optimal effects are achieved by combining seed treatment with two to three foliar applications during the growing season.

  • Seed treatment: 50–100 g active ingredient per tonne of seeds.
  • Foliar feeding for cereals: 200–300 g active ingredient per hectare.
  • Foliar feeding for vegetables: 150–250 g active ingredient per hectare.

Restrictions

The main limitation is manganese toxicity when in excess, which most often occurs in strongly acidic soils (pH below 5.0). Under such conditions, the element transitions into a soluble form and begins to inhibit root system development, causing tissue necrosis.

Excess manganese manifests as brown spots on leaves, curling of leaf margins, and general shoot deformation. If "manganese toxicity" is observed, liming must be carried out immediately to raise the pH level.

It is important to remember the antagonism of manganese with other elements, such as iron and zinc. Excessive application of one of these elements can trigger a manganese deficiency, even if its soil content is within the normal range.

Exceeding recommended concentrations of working solutions during foliar application is not advised, as it may lead to chlorophyll damage and slowed photosynthesis. Always conduct a compatibility test when mixing with pesticides.

When using fertilizers in protected ground, manganese levels in nutrient solutions must be strictly controlled, as substrates have limited buffer capacity and calculation errors can quickly lead to toxicity in greenhouse crops.
