Why rice crops could be in for a weird year
A combination of climate change and a powerful El Niño threatens global rice markets, despite ongoing agricultural innovations.
More than half of the world's population relies on rice as a primary staple. However, this season, the combination of the El Niño weather pattern and the ongoing climate crisis is creating conditions where yields for this vital crop could plummet. According to projections by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, global rice production is set to decline for the first time in over a decade. In the United States, particularly in the Mississippi Delta, production is expected to fall by more than half, hitting its lowest level in 40 years.
Atul Jain, a professor of climate, meteorology, and atmospheric sciences at the University of Illinois, notes that high temperatures can substantially reduce rice yields. Farmers are facing extreme climate events that severely limit crop potential. The scientific community has characterized the current El Niño as a "super El Niño," a naturally occurring phenomenon that periodically drives intense droughts and extreme weather across the globe.
Experts at Columbia University’s Climate School report that the current El Niño has reached "very strong" levels and will continue to intensify in the coming months. The mechanism involves weakening trade winds, causing warmer ocean water in the Pacific to drift eastward, creating atmospheric waves that resonate globally. Jeremy Zwinger, president and CEO of The Rice Trader, summarizes the situation concisely: "Drought kills commodities." Markets are wary of potential supply chain disruptions as climate-driven volatility makes agricultural production increasingly unpredictable.
Nevertheless, the industry has built a degree of resilience. Over recent decades, governments and corporations have invested billions of dollars in improved irrigation systems and the development of hardier rice varieties. India, in particular, has seen significant success in utilizing new technology, which has helped it rise to the top of the list of rice-producing nations this year, even in the face of unpredictable monsoon seasons.
Paradoxically, these agricultural gains have sometimes led to an oversupply of rice, which has caused prices to fall and reduced profit margins for farmers. Furthermore, while higher concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere may boost photosynthesis, this benefit is unlikely to offset long-term climate risks. Alisher Mirzabaev, a senior scientist at the International Rice Research Institute, warns that for every degree of warming Celsius, rice production is expected to fall by approximately 8 percent, while pressures from salinity intrusion, floods, and longer dry spells continue to mount.
