Indonesian government sends 200 water pumps to support Kalimantan wildfire response

The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has taken swift action to support the containment of forest and land fires by deploying 200 water pump units to four provinces across the island of Kalimantan. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced the initiative in Jakarta on Thursday, noting that the deployment followed direct instructions from President Prabowo Subianto to expedite critical aid to wildfire-affected regions.

The distribution of the equipment was divided equally among the provinces: Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan each received 50 units. Minister Amran emphasized that the pumps are intended for dual-purpose use. While they are currently critical for emergency firefighting efforts, they are designed to serve smallholders and plantation owners for crop irrigation once the fire risks subside and conditions return to normal.

This delivery is part of the ministry’s broader effort to preserve the productivity of agricultural lands while bolstering national food security during the dry season. According to the Minister, while there have been no official reports of significant damage to agricultural or plantation land in these specific areas, the ministry remains in a state of high alert and continues to monitor the situation closely to protect the nation's food supplies.

Indonesia is intensifying its response to wildfire threats as the strong El Niño phenomenon exacerbates dry weather conditions. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has forecasted that the risk of forest and land fires will reach its peak between August and September 2026. The government is currently utilizing a multi-pronged approach, integrating ground-based firefighting units, aerial operations, and weather modification technology to contain the blazes and mitigate the impact of the resulting haze.

By providing this equipment, the government aims to combine immediate disaster relief with long-term investment in agricultural infrastructure. This strategy ensures that resources provided during the current crisis will continue to benefit farmers long after the fires are extinguished, reinforcing the resilience of the agricultural sector against future climate-related challenges.
