Keralam deploys ANNAM.AI smart weather stations for climate-smart farming

The government of Kerala has launched a strategic initiative to deploy ANNAM.AI smart weather stations across the state as part of a 100-day action plan. This project aims to bolster climate-smart agriculture and enhance data-driven decision-making at the farm level. The technological deployment is being executed in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, showcasing how advanced technology can be leveraged for better governance and support for the agricultural community.

Pushpendra Singh, Project Director of ANNAM.AI and Dean at IIT Ropar, stated that the initiative is designed to improve farmers' access to reliable weather information. By providing hyper-local, real-time data, the system enables farmers to make informed decisions regarding sowing, irrigation, crop protection, and harvesting. This capability is expected to help farmers prepare for shifting weather patterns, significantly reducing input costs and minimizing potential crop losses.

Kerala is recognized as one of India's most climate-sensitive regions. With annual rainfall exceeding 3,000 mm and being the first region to receive the Southwest Monsoon, the state faces intense microclimate variations across its landscape—from the 600 km coastline to the Western Ghats. These variations make hyper-local weather intelligence not just an advantage, but a necessity for sustainable farming in the region.

The state's agricultural structure is characterized by high fragmentation, with 92% of farms smaller than 1 hectare. These holdings often feature mixed, multi-layer cropping systems, including coconut, pepper, banana, spices, and vegetables. Such systems are highly dependent on precise humidity and sunlight monitoring. By deploying ANNAM.AI stations, the government aims to strengthen climate monitoring and disaster preparedness at the village level, ensuring that small-scale farmers receive the same benefits as larger commercial operations.

This initiative positions Kerala as a key leader in India’s AI-driven agricultural transformation. The insights gained from Kerala’s deployment will serve as a national model for developing crop advisory systems and climate risk prediction models. By integrating high digital literacy with modern AI tools, Kerala is shaping the future of India's agricultural intelligence, providing a template that can be scaled nationally to support farmers in adapting to the realities of a changing climate.
