Cabinet Approves Rabi MSP Hike For Six Crops; Farmers To Get ₹90,962 Crore Support In 2027-28 Season
The Union Cabinet has officially approved an increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for six major Rabi crops, with the revised rates expected to result in an estimated payout of ₹90,962 crore during the 2027-28 marketing season. The government stated that the policy move is aimed at ensuring remunerative returns for farmers and encouraging long-term crop diversification towards pulses and oilseeds.
The crops covered under this comprehensive MSP revision include wheat, barley, gram, lentil, rapeseed-mustard, and safflower. By adjusting these baseline prices, the administration seeks to protect domestic growers from market volatility and incentivize the production of essential commodities where local output might need reinforcement.
Safflower received the highest absolute MSP increase, jumping by ₹675 per quintal. It was followed closely by rapeseed and mustard, which registered an increase of ₹413 per quintal, reflecting the ongoing policy priority given to domestic oilseed production.
Further adjustments were applied across the remaining targeted crops in the portfolio. The MSP for lentil has been raised by ₹390 per quintal, barley by ₹136 per quintal, and gram by ₹83 per quintal. Meanwhile, wheat received a modest absolute increase of ₹25 per quintal for the upcoming marketing cycle.
Agricultural experts note that these systematic revisions form a cornerstone of the nation's food security and farmer-support framework. By guaranteeing these support levels, the government aims to give producers financial predictability ahead of planting and harvesting operations.
