Indonesia seeks rice export agreements with Malaysia and Singapore
The State Logistics Agency (Bulog) is negotiating rice export deals to ensure price certainty and support for Indonesian farmers while bolstering trade ties.
The Indonesian State Logistics Agency (Bulog) is actively pursuing rice export agreements with Malaysia and Singapore. According to Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, the primary goal of these initiatives is to secure trade cooperation that benefits local farmers, the national economy, and ensures sustainable export practices through price certainty.
These efforts follow direct instructions from the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, to explore and finalize export opportunities. Currently, Bulog is coordinating with Malaysian officials to confirm a suitable schedule for technical discussions. Ramdhani emphasized that the timing remains subject to internal processes in Malaysia, but communication is ongoing to facilitate a mutually beneficial outcome regarding pricing.
As part of these export targets, Indonesia aims to supply 200,000 tons of rice to Malaysia. Bulog and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture are planning a visit to Sarawak, Malaysia, to engage in detailed negotiations. These discussions are strictly aligned with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, which mandates that export pricing must protect the interests of Indonesian farmers while ensuring a reasonable return for the state.
Concurrently, negotiations with Singapore are underway for an export volume of 10,000 tons of rice. This proposal was a key topic during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, held in Jakarta on June 29. The meeting highlighted the commitment of both nations to regional food security and bilateral cooperation.
Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani reiterated that Bulog is committed to finalizing these agreements through continuous diplomatic and technical efforts. By pursuing price certainty, Indonesia aims to establish a stable framework for its rice exports, ensuring that the country’s agricultural sector remains robust and competitive on the international stage while meeting the food demands of its neighbors.
