Greece doubles fishing diesel subsidy
During a visit to the Chalkidiki region, the Greek Prime Minister stated that the domestic fishing industry deserves greater governmental support. The head of government emphasized that strengthening this sector is a vital component of economic and social stability for the country's coastal regions.
As part of the new support measures, Greek authorities announced the doubling of diesel subsidies for professional fishermen. This initiative aims to offset rising operational costs and mitigate the impacts of inflationary pressures on fishing vessel owners.
Greece's fishing sector traditionally plays a key role in ensuring food security, supporting local markets, and sustaining coastal communities. However, sharp increases in energy prices in recent years have significantly complicated operations for fishermen, threatening the profitability of the trade.
It is expected that the expanded financial assistance will alleviate the burden on industry enterprises and preserve jobs within fishing communities. The Greek government continues its dialogue with sector representatives to assess further needs and implement effective state aid measures.
Experts and industry associations have positively evaluated the authorities' decision, noting the timeliness and necessity of additional funding. Doubling the diesel subsidy is seen as an important step toward the long-term sustainability of Greek fisheries.
