Flupyradifurone: European Parliament blocks the Commission to protect bees and children's health

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament has officially vetoed an attempt by the European Commission to increase Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) of flupyradifurone, a controversial neonicotinoid insecticide, in rapeseed (canola). Members of the European Parliament made the decision to protect children's brain development and pollinator populations rather than support unsustainable agricultural practices.

Martin Dermine, PAN Europe Executive Director, stated that this narrative repeats continuously: despite substantial scientific knowledge regarding the risks that neonicotinoids pose to children's brains, the European Commission keeps attempting to raise permitted residue levels in food, favoring industrial farming over public health and environmental safety.

Flupyradifurone is a new-generation neonicotinoid that was first approved in the European Union in 2015. When researchers began investigating this insecticide, they established that it is highly toxic to bees, particularly bumble bees and wild bees, which are essential for ecosystem stability.

Pauline Cervan, a Senior toxicologist at Génération Futures in France, noted that a significant body of scientific research demonstrates that pesticides from the neonicotinoid family cross the placental barrier and directly interact with neurons from developing fetuses, posing serious risks to future generations.

Environmental advocates and scientific experts continue to emphasize the necessity of aligning agricultural policy with independent risk assessments. The parliamentary committee's veto is welcomed as a vital protective measure for both environmental biodiversity and public health across the European Union.
