Researchers at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's research and development centre are racing to breed resilient crop varieties capable of withstanding severe weather and disease pressures while maintaining profitable yields for farmers. Producers across the Prairies face increasingly challenging growing seasons as climate change alters agricultural realities in real time.

Wheat breeder Santosh Kumar kicks off each growing season with 300,000 hopeful plant candidates. He spends years methodically culling seeds to identify a handful of resilient specimens capable of withstanding Mother Nature's unpredictable shifts, including developing early-maturing crops for accelerated harvesting. The entire pipeline from the initial concept to a final market-ready product takes roughly eight years or longer, involving continuous growing, genetic mapping, and rigorous resilience analysis.

While Kumar develops new varieties through targeted cross-breeding, physiologist Michael Gebre studies the physical reactions of plants to weather stresses. His role is to determine why certain plants exhibit superior resilience compared to others. Having studied droughts for over a decade, Gebre emphasizes the urgent pressure to deliver hearty seeds to fields as extreme weather becomes the new norm for agricultural production systems in the Prairies and globally.

Scientific progress, however, faces severe environmental hurdles. This summer, the Brandon research station suffered heavy flooding, submerging nearly 400 acres and destroying numerous valuable germplasm resources on the farm. Quick thinking by researchers who evacuated select samples into greenhouses as water levels rose managed to save two years' worth of ongoing field trials and preserve essential genetics within the research pipeline.

Despite weather-related setbacks, both Kumar and Gebre maintain an optimistic outlook, stressing that meticulous research, rigorous culling, and broad collaboration will continuously enhance crop efficiency and resilience. Their ultimate objective is to provide practical solutions that protect the food chain and allow farmers to sustain their profitability despite escalating climate challenges.
