The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) in Nigeria has launched an ambitious digital transformation strategy aimed at modernizing its operations and improving support for the nation’s farmers. Managing Director Ayo Sotinrin stated that the institution is undergoing a complete overhaul to transition from a government parastatal model to a modern, commercial-style financial institution dedicated to developmental impact.

To drive this transformation, the bank assembled a technical working group comprising eight Chief Technology Officers from Nigeria’s largest banks to design a roadmap for the BOA's technological infrastructure. Consequently, the bank has replaced outdated manual processes and ledger-based bookkeeping with digital platforms, enabling customers to access banking services through electronic channels, including mobile phones and computers.

A core component of the new strategy is the implementation of an electronic wallet system linked directly to customer accounts. This system allows the government to distribute interventions, such as fertilizer, seeds, and crop protection chemicals, in a transparent manner. Farmers can access these inputs at collection centers, where POS terminals automatically deduct the value from their electronic wallets, ensuring efficient delivery and accountability.

Sotinrin noted that the reforms are centered on three pillars: restructuring internal operations, recapitalizing the institution, and enhancing overall efficiency. Furthermore, the bank has shifted its financing approach, prioritizing lending through farmer aggregation companies rather than relying solely on individual micro-credit facilities. This strategic pivot is intended to reduce administrative costs and improve loan repayment rates across the board.

Additionally, the bank has introduced the 'Renewed Hope Smallholder Support and Value Chain Programme,' which has secured a quarter of a trillion Naira in funding from the Federal Government. This program is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of smallholder farmers. By offering tailored financial products and improved digital tools, the Bank of Agriculture is positioning itself as a vital engine for Nigeria's agricultural development and long-term food security.
