The primary hosts of this pathogen include apple, pear, quince, and crabapple trees. Furthermore, it affects many ornamental landscape plants such as hawthorn, mountain ash, pyracantha, and cotoneaster. The bacteria colonize the vascular system, spreading systemically throughout the plant's tissues.

The disease is characterized by a scorched appearance of blossoms and leaves. Typical symptoms include the wilting and blackening of inflorescences, the curling of succulent new growth tips into a "shepherd’s crook" shape, and the formation of deep, necrotic cankers on woody branches and the trunk.

The development of fire blight is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly warm temperatures (between 18°C and 25°C) combined with high humidity or rainfall. Pollinating insects, wind-blown rain, and contaminated pruning tools act as the main vectors for disease transmission across the orchard.

Effective management is based on a strict integrated approach. Prevention includes planting resistant cultivars and minimizing excessive nitrogen fertilization that promotes lush, susceptible growth. Once an infection is detected, immediate removal and destruction of affected parts, followed by thorough disinfection of all pruning tools, are essential to halt the progression of the pathogen.
