Big trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) is a perennial legume best established in the spring when soil moisture is abundant. Sowing should occur as soon as the soil is workable and has warmed up slightly.

The plant is well-adapted to cooler climates and possesses good winter hardiness. Its creeping rhizomes allow it to spread and persist in challenging environments, effectively protecting the soil from erosion.
Beyond its tolerance to moisture, it provides high-quality forage rich in protein. It does not contain condensed tannins, which improves the nutritional digestibility for grazing livestock.
Biologically, it is characterized by succulent stems and yellow pea-like flowers. Its persistence in waterlogged soils makes it a critical component for sustainable agricultural use in lowland pastures.

While generally robust, big trefoil can be susceptible to foliar fungal diseases like rust and powdery mildew, particularly in seasons with high humidity and stagnant air.
