Solieriaceae is a family of red algae (Rhodophyta) that represents one of the most economically valuable groups in global marine aquaculture. This family includes the genera Kappaphycus and Eucheuma, which are the primary biological sources for the global production of carrageenan, a versatile thickening and gelling agent used worldwide.

The native distribution of these algae is restricted to tropical and subtropical marine environments. The Philippines, Indonesia, and various regions in East Africa are the leaders in the commercial cultivation of Solieriaceae, benefiting from consistent water temperatures and nutrient-rich currents that are essential for rapid biomass accumulation.

Botanically, these algae exhibit complex, branched thalli with cartilaginous consistency. Their growth strategy is highly adaptive to the benthic zones where they are cultivated. In agricultural settings, they are managed through vegetative propagation, where selected fragments of thalli are attached to cultivation lines or nets to initiate the next growth cycle.

Agronomic management requires specific environmental conditions. A stable water temperature range, moderate to high light intensity, and constant but not turbulent water movement are critical for high yields. Farmers must monitor water salinity levels closely, as extreme fluctuations can disrupt the physiological balance of the algae and decrease production efficiency.

The economic utilization of Solieriaceae is centered on the phycocolloid industry. Beyond carrageenan extraction, these algae are increasingly researched for applications in agricultural biostimulants, improving crop resistance to abiotic stress. They also play a vital role in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems, helping to balance the ecosystem of sea farms.

Major challenges in cultivation include:

  • Epiphyte colonization which competes for light and nutrients.
  • "Ice-ice" disease, characterized by white patches and tissue degradation.
  • Grazing pressure from herbivorous fish and invertebrates.
