Ricciaceae
The Ricciaceae family belongs to the division Marchantiophyta (liverworts). These are primitive non-vascular plants that lack true roots, stems, and leaves. Instead, they consist of a thallus—a flat, green body that either spreads across a substrate or floats on the surface of the water.

The origin and distribution of Ricciaceae span nearly all climatic zones worldwide, excluding Antarctica. In an agricultural and aquaculture context, the most prominent representative is Riccia fluitans, commonly found in freshwater bodies throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, forming dense floating mats.
Botanical features of this family include a dichotomously branching thallus. For aquatic species, the thallus is thin and translucent green, fragmenting easily upon mechanical disturbance, which facilitates vegetative reproduction. Since they lack a vascular system, these plants absorb nutrients directly from the water through their entire body surface.
Cultivation requirements depend heavily on environmental stability. In aquaculture, Riccia prefers water temperatures between 20–25°C, bright light, and an adequate supply of dissolved carbon dioxide. Water quality is critical; the plants are highly sensitive to toxic residues and excessive nutrient concentrations, such as nitrates and phosphates, which can hinder growth.
Economic and practical applications of Ricciaceae are primarily found in aquarium hobbies and ornamental pond management.

- Serving as protective shelter for fish fry.
Diseases and pests are rarely a significant concern; however, when ecosystem balance is disrupted, plants may become overgrown with filamentous algae that entangle the thallus and stunt development. Additionally, snails and certain herbivorous fish species are known to consume large amounts of Ricciaceae biomass in a short period if not properly managed.
