In agriculture, they are primarily cultivated as perennial tree-like plants or robust shrubs.

Botanically, Pandanaceae consist of evergreen trees or shrubs, often characterized by stilt roots that provide stability in soft coastal soils. Their leaves are long, sword-shaped, and typically arranged in dense clusters at the tips of the stems. The plants are dioecious, and the fruits of many species bear a striking resemblance to large pineapples.

Climate and cultivation requirements are specific, as the crop thrives in consistently high temperatures and high atmospheric humidity. On a commercial scale, pandans are grown in well-drained yet moisture-retentive soils. Propagation is most frequently achieved through vegetative methods, such as using offshoots, which ensures the consistency of varietal traits essential for culinary quality or fiber production.
