Botanically, they are characterized by the presence of bifid or simple leaves and, most notably, ventral lobules. These lobules are crucial structural adaptations that function as water-retaining organs. The gametophyte stage is the dominant phase in their life cycle, showcasing remarkable variation in size and branching patterns across different genera.
Environmental requirements include high air humidity, consistent precipitation, and low atmospheric pollution. They thrive in environments where light is filtered through a canopy, preventing direct excessive solar radiation. Because they lack a true root system, they absorb water and nutrients directly from the air and mist, making them extremely sensitive to changes in atmospheric chemistry.
Economic use is currently limited to fundamental botanical science and ecological bio-indication. They are not subject to standard agricultural practices or pest management. However, conservation efforts focus on maintaining forest integrity, as the disappearance of canopy trees directly leads to the loss of these sensitive bryophyte communities.
