The plant structure consists of a simple leafy thallus without vascular tissue or roots. It relies on rhizoids to anchor itself to substrates such as damp soil, rocks, or decaying logs, while nutrients are absorbed directly from the surrounding environment.

Humidity is the primary environmental factor for its growth. Jungermannia requires high atmospheric moisture levels and consistently damp conditions to prevent desiccation, which is why it thrives near forest streams and shaded rocky outcrops.

It prefers acidic substrates and is highly sensitive to soil chemistry. Nitrogen-rich agricultural fertilizers are detrimental to its growth, as they alter the micro-ecosystem, leading to the decline of liverwort colonies in proximity to farms.

Temperature requirements are typically moderate to cool. High temperatures, combined with low humidity, are lethal to the plant, limiting its distribution to specific niches within temperate and tropical mountainous regions.

Habitat destruction remains the most significant threat to Jungermannia populations. Deforestation, drainage projects, and the conversion of wetlands into agricultural land directly remove the specialized environments the plant requires.

Air pollution acts as a silent killer for these bryophytes. Because they absorb nutrients directly from the air and rain, they are highly susceptible to toxic deposition, including heavy metals and sulfur dioxide.

Climate change is another major challenge, as it alters local rainfall patterns and increases the frequency of heatwaves. These fluctuations disrupt the delicate moisture balance necessary for the survival of liverwort species.

Mechanical disturbance from human activity, such as hiking or livestock grazing in sensitive forest zones, causes physical damage to the delicate mats formed by the moss, leading to fragmentation and loss of colony integrity.

Invasive plant species can outcompete liverworts for space and light. As forest understories change, the increased canopy closure or competition from aggressive ground cover plants often displaces the specialized Jungermannia colonies.
