Carteria is a genus of unicellular green algae belonging to the order Chlamydomonadales. These organisms are widely recognized for their distinct morphology: a single cell equipped with four flagella of equal length, which allow them to move efficiently through aquatic environments.

Morphologically, Carteria cells are generally spherical or ovoid. Inside the cell, there is a prominent cup-shaped chloroplast, often containing a pyrenoid, which serves as a center for starch synthesis. These algae inhabit a variety of freshwater habitats, ranging from stagnant ponds and shallow ditches to moist soil surfaces. They are known for their ability to thrive in environments with varying nutrient levels, often showing a preference for waters rich in dissolved organic compounds.
Regarding environmental requirements, Carteria species are phototrophic but can adapt to mixotrophic conditions when light is limited. They require a stable temperature range, typically between 18°C and 25°C, and are highly sensitive to sudden fluctuations in pH levels, which should ideally remain near neutral.
In research settings, Carteria is utilized as a model organism for studying flagellar movement and chemotaxis. Culturing these algae requires precise management of light cycles (typically 12/12 or 16/8 hours) and constant monitoring of nutrient depletion to prevent the culture from entering a stationary growth phase prematurely.
