Internally, their cells contain chloroplasts with distinct pyrenoids, reflecting an evolutionary link to ancestral plant forms.

Cultivation of these organisms is not practiced on a commercial scale, but they are subject to research regarding their environmental impact. Their most vital agricultural asset is their symbiotic relationship with Nostoc, a genus of cyanobacteria. Through this partnership, the plant receives nitrogen, allowing it to thrive in nutrient-poor conditions while indirectly improving soil fertility.

Maintaining a healthy balance in soil micro-ecosystems often involves understanding the role of such bryophytes. They are susceptible to chemical herbicides and soil compacting, which limit their growth.
