Frog orchid

The distribution range of the genus spans the temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, extending across Europe, Asia, and North America. It typically inhabits moist meadows, calcareous grasslands, and open woodlands where environmental conditions remain stable.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its pair of palmate tubers, which allow it to store nutrients over the winter. The stem carries several lanceolate leaves, and the flowers are arranged in a spike, often exhibiting a greenish-yellow color with a trifid lip.

The plant has strict ecological requirements, particularly concerning soil moisture and the presence of specific mycorrhizal fungi necessary for germination. Because of its dependence on this symbiotic relationship, it cannot be cultivated like traditional agricultural crops.

While the Frog orchid lacks direct commercial agricultural use, it remains a critical component of local ecosystems. Conservation efforts are often focused on protecting its natural habitats from agricultural intensification, as the species is sensitive to fertilizers and land drainage.
