Historically found in temporary freshwater pools and ponds, these algae have a wide global distribution. In their native environment, they are highly resilient, surviving periods of drought and high UV exposure by entering a dormant encysted state. This natural mechanism is exploited in industrial cultivation to maximize the yield of valuable pigments.

Botanically, the organism exhibits a distinct life cycle. During the green vegetative phase, the cells are motile and focus on biomass accumulation. When subjected to environmental stress—such as nutrient depletion or intense light—the cells undergo a morphological transition into palmelloid or cyst forms, accumulating high concentrations of red astaxanthin to shield their internal structures.

Successful large-scale production requires strict adherence to agrotechnical protocols. Cultivation usually occurs in photobioreactors, which provide precise control over light intensity, CO2 levels, and temperature (typically maintained between 20°C and 25°C). The growth medium must be carefully balanced with nitrates, phosphates, and trace elements to ensure high cell density before inducing the pigmentation phase.
