Heudelot's water lily

Nymphaea heudelotii, commonly known as Heudelot's water lily, belongs to the Nymphaeaceae family. This species originates from tropical Africa, where it thrives in freshwater habitats characterized by soft, nutrient-rich substrates and stagnant water conditions.

Botanically, it is a small-stature aquatic plant. It displays a clear dimorphism between submersed leaves and floating leaves, depending on the depth of the water and the environmental conditions provided during the growth cycle, which is typical for many tropical water lily species.

Successful cultivation requires stable water temperatures between 22°C and 28°C. Being a tropical plant, it does not tolerate cold water shocks, which can cause the plant to enter a dormant state or even lead to tissue necrosis in the delicate root systems.

The soil requirements are specific: the plant prefers a substrate rich in organic matter and iron. To ensure vigorous growth, it is essential to use a nutrient-dense substrate or provide root-level fertilizers that supply key minerals without significantly altering the water's pH balance.

Lighting is a critical factor in the management of this culture. A high-intensity light source with a full spectrum is recommended to prevent the plant from becoming leggy and to encourage the development of dense, healthy foliage, which is the primary indicator of the plant's overall health.
