These leaves are densely covered with trichomes, which are specialized hair-like structures that reflect excess sunlight and absorb water and dissolved nutrients directly from the environment.

In terms of light requirements, Tillandsia heteromorpha demands bright, indirect sunlight. While it can tolerate some exposure to morning sun, intense midday heat can cause the leaves to dehydrate quickly. Consistent, filtered light is essential to maintain the structural integrity and health of the rosette.

Optimal cultivation involves mounting the plant on wood, cork, or rock. Since it is an epiphyte, it does not require a traditional soil medium. Overwatering or planting in dense soil will lead to rapid root rot, which is the primary cause of plant failure in artificial environments.
