Begonia sutherlandii is a perennial tuberous herbaceous plant belonging to the Begoniaceae family. Native to South Africa, it naturally grows in rocky crevices and woodland areas, which defines its preference for partial shade and well-drained substrates.
The plant features distinct reddish stems and lance-shaped leaves with serrated margins. Its most important botanical characteristic is the underground tuber, which functions as a storage organ for water and nutrients, helping the plant endure periods of drought.
Successful cultivation requires a light, porous soil mix with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Proper drainage is essential, as waterlogging of the root zone leads to rapid decay of the tuber, especially during the dormant season.
The optimal temperature range for active growth is 18–22°C. The plant thrives in bright, indirect light; direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the delicate foliage and reduce the aesthetic value of the plant.
