Sowing dates

Sowing seeds of Allium sphaerocephalon is usually carried out in late autumn or early spring. Autumn sowing allows seeds to undergo natural stratification, which improves germination rates.

Spring sowing is preferred in regions with severe winters, with seeds placed in the soil as soon as it thaws and warms up to 5–10 degrees Celsius.

The sowing depth is 1–2 centimeters, which is optimal for ensuring strong sprout emergence without depleting the seedling's energy reserves.

The spacing between rows should be at least 20–25 centimeters to ensure good air circulation and to facilitate weeding between the plants during the growing season.

Since plants grown from seeds often take two to three years to bloom, many agronomists prefer vegetative propagation using daughter bulbs for faster results.

Growing requirements

Round-headed garlic belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and prefers open, well-lit areas. Direct sunlight is crucial for the development of dense and vibrant flower heads.

The crop requires excellent soil drainage. Waterlogging during the autumn and winter seasons is fatal to the bulbs and quickly leads to rot.

Soils should be light, sandy, or loamy with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Growth is significantly stunted in highly acidic soil conditions.

The plant is highly frost-resistant, which is typical for species native to the temperate latitudes of Eurasia, allowing it to withstand significant temperature fluctuations.

During the growing season, moderate irrigation is required. Excessive moisture during the flowering phase can trigger fungal infections in the foliage.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to the crop is root rot, which occurs when soil is overwatered or when there is insufficient drainage on the planting site.

Under conditions of high air humidity, downy mildew can develop on the leaves, manifesting as a grey coating and causing premature tissue death.

The onion fly is the most common pest, damaging bulbs and the basal plate, which leads to wilting and the eventual death of the entire plant.

Thrips may attack the above-ground parts of the plant, sucking sap from the leaves, weakening the plant and reducing its ornamental value.

Disease prevention includes strict crop rotation, seed treatment, and the use of fungicides at the first sign of any infection.

Harvesting

Seed collection is carried out at the end of summer when the flower heads turn brown and begin to dry out, taking care not to miss the pod-splitting stage.

For floral arrangements or drying, flower heads are harvested during the full-bloom phase when the coloration is most intense and visually striking.

For propagation purposes, bulbs should be lifted after the foliage has fully yellowed, typically occurring in late July or early August in temperate climates.

After harvesting, the bulbs should be dried in a ventilated, shaded area, cleaned of soil residue and old scales, and then stored properly.

Planting material should be kept in a dry, cool environment at approximately 10–15 degrees Celsius, ensuring good airflow to prevent premature spoilage.
