Sowing dates

The planting of Aflatun onion bulbs should be carried out in the autumn, typically between September and October. It is crucial to plant them before the ground freezes, allowing the roots to establish themselves well in advance of the cold winter season.

The recommended planting depth is approximately three times the height of the bulb, usually ranging from 12 to 15 centimeters. This depth helps to protect the bulb from frost damage and promotes stronger growth during the spring season.

Spacing between bulbs should be kept at about 25–30 centimeters to ensure adequate air circulation and to prevent the spread of diseases. Adequate spacing also ensures that individual plants have enough resources for healthy growth.

The species is hardy, though it benefits from a light layer of mulch in regions where winters are particularly harsh and snow cover is sparse. This helps stabilize soil temperatures and prevents damage to the developing root systems.

Fertilization with a balanced mix of potassium and phosphorus in early spring can enhance the size and durability of the floral stalks. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can lead to lush leaf growth at the expense of flower production.
