Tromotriche choanantha is a specialized succulent belonging to the Apocynaceae family, native to the arid regions of South Africa. It is prized by collectors for its unique, funnel-shaped flowers and compact, angular stems that store water efficiently.

This species requires high light intensity to maintain its characteristic structure. In its natural habitat, it thrives in rocky outcrops where drainage is excellent, which defines its specific requirements in cultivation.

The substrate must be highly mineral-based, typically consisting of pumice, lava rock, and a small fraction of organic potting soil. Proper aeration of the roots is the most important factor in preventing stem collapse.

Watering protocols must mimic the wet and dry cycles of the Cape region. During the active growing season, water thoroughly once the substrate has completely dried out, ensuring that no water remains in the pot tray.

Temperature control is essential for successful flowering. The plant benefits from a distinct dormancy period during winter, with temperatures dropping to roughly 10-12 degrees Celsius, which promotes bud initiation.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to this species is overwatering, which quickly leads to soft rot of the stems. If rot appears, the affected parts must be surgically removed, and the plant repotted into a fresher, drier substrate immediately.

Mealybugs are the most persistent pests found on these succulents. They frequently hide in the crevices between the stem ribs, making physical removal with an alcohol-soaked swab a necessary part of routine maintenance.

Root rot caused by moisture-loving fungi is a recurring issue in closed greenhouse conditions. Maintaining a steady airflow is essential to keep the surface of the plant dry and prevent pathogen colonization.

Spider mites can occasionally infest the plant during hot, dry summer months. Using light horticultural oils or specialized miticides is recommended if webs or discoloration of the stem epidermis are observed.

Poor lighting leads to etiolation, where the stems lose their compact, robust appearance and become elongated and weak. Such plants are more susceptible to diseases and require gradual acclimatization to brighter conditions.
