Description
Growing requirements
Oroya borchersii is a globular cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family, native to the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes. It is recognized for its dense, woolly spine coverage and attractive pinkish-red flowers that appear in a crown at the top.
To cultivate this species successfully, it requires very bright, direct light exposure. High-altitude plants thrive when given adequate airflow and a significant temperature drop during the night, which mimics their natural mountain habitat.
The potting substrate must be extremely porous. A mixture of inorganic components such as pumice, perlite, and coarse sand with minimal organic matter is necessary to prevent root rot and ensure fast drainage after watering.
Watering should be managed strictly throughout the year. During the growing season, wait until the substrate is entirely dry before soaking. In winter, keep the plant completely dry and cool to induce a proper dormancy period, which is essential for blooming.
This plant is strictly ornamental, intended for greenhouse cultivation or as a specimen for succulent collectors. It is not grown for agricultural or nutritional purposes, serving purely aesthetic functions in botanical collections.
Main diseases and pests
The primary pests affecting this species are spider mites and mealybugs, which settle in the crevices between ribs and spines. Root rot, caused by overwatering or poor drainage, remains the most frequent cause of plant mortality.
